Recommended Dosage and Usage
Each tablet of NOW Foods Methyl Folate provides 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folate from Quatrefolic®. The Reference Nutrient Intake (RNI) for adults is 200 mcg, but it increases to 600 mcg during pregnancy and 500 mcg during lactation. The upper safe limit from supplements is 1,000 mcg daily, so this product is at the maximum. Do not exceed one tablet daily unless advised by a health care professional. For best results, take one tablet daily with a meal. If you are taking other supplements that contain folate, check the total to avoid exceeding 1,000 mcg from supplements.
Understanding Methylfolate: The Active Form of Vitamin B9
Methylfolate, also known as L-methylfolate or 5-MTHF, is the biologically active form of folate (vitamin B9). Unlike synthetic folic acid, which must be converted in the liver by the enzyme MTHFR, methylfolate is already in the coenzyme form that your body can uses immediately. This makes it a superior choice for individuals with MTHFR gene variants, which affect up to 40% of the population and reduce the efficiency of folic acid conversion. Folic acid is commonly added to fortified foods and standard supplements, but methylfolate provides a more direct pathway to support normal homocysteine metabolism, DNA synthesis, and cell division. NOW Foods Methyl Folate uses Quatrefolic®, a patented form of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which has demonstrated bioavailability superior to dietary folate.
Why Choose Methylfolate Over Synthetic Folic Acid?
The key distinction lies in absorption and usability. Folic acid is a synthetic compound that requires a two-step conversion in the liver to become active. This process is rate-limited and can be incomplete, especially in people with MTHFR variations. In contrast, methylfolate is already active, making it immediately available for bodily functions. Quatrefolic®, the specific form used in this product, is a glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-MTHF that offers enhanced stability and solubility compared to other forms of methylfolate. Studies indicate it provides superior bioavailability, meaning more of the nutrient reaches the bloodstream and tissues. For those concerned about unmetabolised folic acid in the bloodstream—a potential issue with high doses of synthetic folic acid—methylfolate eliminates this concern entirely.
Who May Benefit from Methylfolate Supplementation?
While everyone requires folate, certain groups are more likely to benefit from a methylfolate supplement: women planning pregnancy or pregnant, individuals with MTHFR gene variants, people with elevated homocysteine levels, vegetarians and vegans, and older adults. Neural tube development occurs in the first weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing foetus. Individuals with reduced MTHFR activity cannot efficiently convert folic acid, making methylfolate a more reliable option. Methylfolate supports the methylation cycle that helps lower homocysteine. Plant-based diets can be low in folate, especially in its active forms; supplementation may help meet needs. Nutrient absorption often declines with age; methylfolate bypasses some conversion steps. Always consult a health care professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medication.
How to Choose a Quality Methylfolate Supplement
Not all methylfolate supplements are created equal. Consider the following criteria: third-party testing for purity and potency—NOW Foods is GMP certified (NPA A-rated), meaning all manufacturing processes, including laboratory testing, are regularly inspected. Choose patented forms like Quatrefolic® or Metafolin® with documented bioavailability. This product is non-GMO, vegan/vegetarian, and free of common allergens like gluten, soya, and dairy. NOW Foods has been a family-owned company since 1968, known for commitment to quality and transparency.
Health Benefits of Methylfolate
Adequate folate intake is essential throughout life, and methylfolate offers specific advantages due to its bioactive nature. Based on European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) approved health claims, folate contributes to: normal homocysteine metabolism; normal psychological function; normal cell division; normal blood formation; normal maternal tissue growth during pregnancy; normal amino acid synthesis; normal immunological function; and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. These benefits highlight the role of folate in maintaining overall health and wellbeing.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
Methylfolate is generally well tolerated. High doses of folate can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency, which may allow anaemia to improve while neurological damage progresses. Therefore, individuals at risk for B12 deficiency (e.g., older adults, vegans, those with pernicious anaemia) should ensure adequate B12 status. Other rare side effects may include mild digestive upset or allergic reactions. Do not take this product if you are allergic to any ingredient. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications, consult your health care provider before uses. Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of reach of children.
